Christopher Nolan recently made history with <em>The Odyssey</em>, becoming the first film ever shot entirely in 70mm IMAX film. However, this was not the first time his films appeared on IMAX screens, as his previous works, including Oppenheimer, have been shown in that expansive format. After years of filmmaking, one of Nolan’s earlier films is set for a theatrical re-release, now in IMAX 70mm.
Nolan began his career in 1993 and has since created 13 feature films, with The Odyssey being his latest achievement, earning critical acclaim and grossing over $246 million worldwide during its opening weekend. In addition to original projects like Interstellar and <em>Inception</em>, Nolan is also associated with DC projects, including the The Dark Knight trilogy. He served as a producer for several Snyderverse DC films such as Man of Steel, Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, and both versions of Justice League.
One of Christopher Nolan’s earlier films is The Prestige, released in 2006. Featuring strong performances from Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale, Michael Caine, and Scarlett Johansson, the film follows two rival magicians whose obsession with creating the ultimate illusion leads to a dangerous feud as they sabotage each other’s acts, resort to violence, and attempt to uncover each other’s secrets. The Prestige grossed over $109 million worldwide, but that figure may change as Nolan recently announced in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that The Prestige will have an IMAX re-release in 70mm to celebrate its 20th anniversary:
“I’m thrilled that they’re going to re-release The Prestige because it’s one of his most underrated performances. I’m just really excited to bring it to fresh audiences. We’re actually going to do 70 millimeter blow-ups. Wally Pfister shot it anamorphically on 35 millimeter, and he did an incredible job. I screened a 35 mil print the other day to check it, and his photography is just extraordinary. Nathan Crowley’s production design is amazing as well. So it’s going to look absolutely beautiful blown up to 70 millimeter, and we’re going to start that process in the next few weeks.”
