There’s nothing like a good old-fashioned fable — especially one about the cost of forcing true love. Fans can find that in a new movie starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård. The new fantasy romantic comedy Wicker made a splash at Sundance this year, and now it finally has its release date. Black Bear is officially set to release the film starring Colman, Elizabeth Debicki, and Peter Dinklage later this year
Black Bear has officially announced that Wicker will receive a limited release on October 23, followed by an expanded release on October 30, 2026. The film is based on a short story by Ursula Wills-Jones titled “The Wicker Husband.” Wicker is described as follows: “Wicker is an audacious comedic fable about sex, marriage, and social convention, centering on a wholly original love story. When the ostracized Fisherwoman (Colman) commissions a wicker husband from the local Basketmaker (Dinklage), her unexpected romance with the creation (Skarsgård) sparks jealousy and threatens the village’s social order.”
The film has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91% out of the festival circuit with 22 reviews counted so far. Collider’s own review out of Sundance from Therese Lacson said that the film wants “to be a fable, but it can’t decide between the charming vagueness of a true fable and a deeper story that delves into the human condition.”
“Wicker is just the kind of film we’re passionate about championing at Black Bear,” said Benjamin Kramer, President of U.S. Distribution. “It’s bold, entertaining, and totally unlike anything else, as its early fans at Sundance have seen. Eleanor and Alex’s creative ambition shines through at every turn. Alongside an unforgettable cast, they have created a fresh and special experience. Supporting visionary filmmakers is at the core of what we do, and we look forward to bringing this unique story to audiences in theaters.”

This slate of actors have a lot of dedicated fans. But Debicki and Colman’s fans have been maybe hoping to see the two together for a while. Watchers of Netflix’sThe Crown have seen both Debicki and Colman take on the Royal family. But they were in opposite seasons of the show. Colman played Queen Elizabeth in Seasons 3 and 4 and Debicki took over forEmma Corin as Princess Diana in Season 5. The show’s set up had a lot of iconic actors playing different stages of Elizabeth’s reign and so despite being in the same show, neither actress shared the screen together. So seeing the two inWicker is giving fans a glimpse of what could have been on the hit Netflix series.
You can see Debicki, Dinklage, Colman, and Skarsgård all shine inWicker when it hits theaters on October 23.
