R-Rated Spy Thriller with Henry Cavill Hits Streaming Milestone

Henry Cavill‘s new spy thriller directed by Guy Ritchie and featuring a stellar cast has now achieved a significant streaming milestone, showcasing its lasting success following a disappointing theatrical release. Cavill is best known for his roles as Superman in the DCEU movie timeline and Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher for three seasons. However, he has also been linked to the spy genre for a long time. The actor was close to being cast as James Bond when Daniel Craig was selected for the role, and Cavill continues to be a fan-favorite choice even now, as a new Bond is being cast.

In the spy genre, Cavill has also starred in films like the recent Argylle and 2015’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E. The latter was directed by Ritchie and featured Cavill as Napoleon Solo, a suave spy reminiscent of James Bond, opposite Armie Hammer’s Illya Kuryakin. This spy film marked the first collaboration between Cavill and Ritchie, with the duo recently reuniting for 2024’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which also includes major stars like Reacher‘s Alan Ritchson and Young Sherlock‘s Hero Fiennes Tiffin, along with 2026’s In the Grey, which sees Jake Gyllenhaal co-star and has reached an impressive streaming milestone.

Cavill & Ritchie’s In The Grey Has Just Crossed Its First Epic Streaming Milestone

Ritchie’s In The Grey has surpassed 100 days trending on Amazon VOD’s Top 25 Movies chart in the United States. This is a significant update for the spy thriller, as Cavill’s latest venture into the genre did not perform well at the box office. After its theatrical release on May 15, In The Grey grossed only $27.8 million worldwide against a reported budget of $70 million (via Forbes), making it a box office disappointment. Now, this R-rated spy thriller led by Cavill and Gyllenhaal has established itself as a successful title on Amazon VOD.

In The Grey‘s recent achievement makes it one of the longest-running hits on Amazon VOD’s United States chart. Ritchie’s new film is only outdone by three other movies in terms of its duration on the chart. Those films include Chris Pratt’s animated video game adaptation The Super Mario Galaxy Movie at 105 days, 2025’s Dracula , directed by Taken‘s Luc Besson at 131 days, and Sydney Sweeney’s R-rated psychological thriller The Housemaid at an impressive 219 days. At the time of writing, In The Grey is striving to maintain its position on the chart, currently ranking #24 out of 25 movies.

In The Grey‘s ongoing success on Amazon VOD indicates how promising Cavill’s new collaboration with the company could be for both parties moving forward. After leading Netflix’s The Witcher for three seasons, Cavill is now set to develop and star in several Warhammer 40,000 movies and TV shows for Prime Video. He will star in a live-action Warhammer 40,000 series being penned by modern horror icon Mike Flanagan for the streamer, as recently disclosed by Games Workshop in its annual report. The recent streaming milestone of In The Grey bodes well for that franchise’s future.
