Laterns has ignited significant interest with its new live-action Sinestro. Ulrich Thomsen portrays the iconic Green Lantern character in the new DCU series. This reveal occurs in Episode 2, “Trust Fall”, when Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) seeks him out in the space prison for information about the Manhunters.
The reveal has led fans to compare Thomsen’s portrayal with Mark Strong‘s Sinestro from the 2011 film Green Lantern. Strong’s Sinestro appeared mostly human, while Thomsen’s version is more faithful to the comics, featuring his signature pink skin, a mustache, and distinct alien characteristics. The series also redefines Sinestro’s role, depicting him as a manipulative figure rather than a conventional villain.
Why is Sinestro receiving so much attention?
Sinestro’s comic-accurate appearance is a primary factor driving online excitement. Thomsen’s pink skin and alien features are particularly striking compared to Strong’s more human-like Sinestro. @AxelTalksFilm on X shared a side-by-side comparison of Thomsen’s look with comic artwork and commented, “That pink skin is so beautiful, welcome back king.”
The character’s role within the narrative is another significant topic of discussion. Sinestro does not serve as the main antagonist this season; instead, he is already imprisoned after betraying the Guardians and killing one of them. Hal was responsible for defeating him, adding weight to their encounter. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the creative team disclosed that they approached Sinestro’s character similarly to Hannibal Lecter from The Silence of the Lambs.
Hal visits Sinestro to gather information about the Manhunters. However, Sinestro uses this opportunity to psychologically manipulate his former student. He also references John Stewart, who might eventually succeed Hal as a Green Lantern. Their dynamic has captivated fans online. @redelk_yt on X shared a clip of their exchange and remarked, “In just a few seconds, Lanterns nails the Hal/Sinestro dynamic. This show just gets it.”
For DC fans, Sinestro’s trajectory in the DCU is thrilling. He is one of Hal Jordan’s most formidable foes in the comics and later leads the Sinestro Corps. Lanterns offers fans a comic-accurate Sinestro along with a rich history with Hal, generating excitement for what lies ahead.
