The Perfect New Action Franchise by Extraction Director Sam Hargrave

Six years after Extraction, Sam Hargrave is transitioning from Tyler Rake’s solo missions to Matchbox: The Movie, an ensemble action film led by John Cena. Cena portrays Sean, an undercover CIA agent whose return home pulls four childhood friends into a quest for stolen nuclear material. Rather than following a single mercenary through various fights, the film presents Hargrave with a diverse group of individuals trying to navigate an unexpected crisis.

Extraction 2 has already demonstrated Hargrave’s knack for maintaining momentum once chaos ensues. Its 21-minute prison escape starts amidst a riot, transitions into a car chase, shifts to a speeding train, and ultimately incorporates a helicopter. Matchbox builds on that instinct, offering Hargrave an entire spy narrative where the next chase, setting, or vehicle can alter the characters’ circumstances.

Matchbox is also a recognizable name without an established storyline that Hargrave must adhere to. There are no iconic heroes, villains, or plots that audiences expect to see replicated. The vehicles provide a connection to the toys, while Hargrave explores the unfolding events around them. Cena further distinguishes the film from Extraction. Initially, Cena believed the Matchbox movie would not succeed until he read the script. Sean is capable in violent situations, but Cena also interacts with four friends who remember him before his CIA involvement.

Extraction director Sam Hargrave with Chris Hemsworth

Before directing Extraction, Sam Hargrave served as a stunt coordinator on Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. His background is evident in the Extraction films, especially when Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake battles through tight hallways, crowded streets, and moving vehicles. Matchbox: The Movie utilizes Hargrave’s stunt expertise on a larger scale, featuring muscle cars, motorcycles, helicopters, and trucks regularly involved in the action.

In one chase sequence, Sean confronts rogue CIA agents on the back of a speeding container truck while Aimee speeds through a tunnel in a muscle car, pursued by armed motorcyclists. Another scene depicts a helicopter destroying an off-road buggy, while a separate stunt launches a truck off a tow-truck ramp. These vehicles are not merely background elements in the fight. In Matchbox, they are integral to the danger.

Why John Cena Is Key To Making A Franchise

John Cena as Jakob Toretto in F9

John Cena as Jakob Toretto in F9

John Cena has previously taken on driving roles in Fast & Furious, portraying Dom Toretto’s younger brother Jakob in both F9 and Fast X. In the latter film, Jakob sacrifices himself by driving a cannon-equipped car into enemy vehicles to aid Dom’s son in escaping. However, Cena’s performances in The Marine through to Peacemaker illustrate why he is well-suited for Matchbox. As Peacemaker, he turns a jungle shootout into a competition with Bloodsport over who can eliminate their foes in the most absurd manner.

Cena’s interactions with Vigilante in Peacemaker are equally entertaining, particularly when they bicker over their questionable tactics while considering themselves serious crime fighters. Cena embraces being the punchline even when portraying someone who believes he is the toughest individual present. This sense of humor aligns perfectly with Sean’s reunion with his childhood friends in Matchbox. Aimee is a race-car driver, Charmaine is a helicopter pilot, Crosby operates construction machinery, and Ted teaches chemistry.

While Sean may be the only trained CIA agent among them, his friends possess skills that become advantageous when pursued by armed operatives. More importantly, these individuals knew Sean long before he became an undercover agent, so he cannot expect them to treat him like the hardened secret operative he has now become. Cena gets to embody the hero without needing to shoulder every fight or deliver every joke alone.

If there is a sequel to Matchbox: The Movie, reuniting these five friends could be just as thrilling as any outrageous car chase Hargrave devises next.
