Coming to an end back in April after a seven-year stint, The Boys is remembered fondly for its unique take on the superhero genre. Based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, the story follows a group of vigilantes known as ‘The Boys’ who make it their mission to put a stop to corrupt superheroes who use their power for personal gain.
Praised for its dark content, action, characters, and storylines, The Boys ran for five seasons, and despite the latter half of the show being considered to be a lot weaker according to fans, the Prime Video release was still considered to be an overall hit.
The Boys Is Back… But Fans Wish It Hadn’t Bothered
Now, whilst we wait for the prequel series, Vought Rising, to premiere in 2027, shedding more light on the company that ensures that the Supes are seen as heroes by the public, fans are flocking to another The Boys spin-off. However, with a myriad of negative reviews, it may just be a spin-off we never asked for.
The spin-off in question is none other than The Boys: Trigger Warning, a Quest VR title set in The Boys universe. In the level-based, stealth-action experience, players will take on the role of Lucas Costa, a father who, after being injected with Compound V, finds himself the proud new owner of unstable powers ranging from telekinesis to laser eyes. Using his newfound powers to take down a family of superheroes, the VR title, developed by ARVORE and published by Sony Pictures Virtual Reality, did receive praise for its voice acting, action, and nods to The Boys, but it seemingly fell flat in every other area.
Trigger Warning May Be The Last Game In The Boys Universe For A While
According to Metacritic, The Boys: Trigger Warning currently sits at a 67 Metascore based on critic reviews. That, in itself, is pretty respectable. Hey, it’s better than average. However, it is the User Score that brings tears to the eye, as the general audience believe the VR title to only be worthy of a mere 1.7, marking it with an ‘Overwhelmingly Dislike’ tag.
With 172 negative reviews as opposed to the 31 positive, it is safe to say that The Boys: Trigger Warning may just be the first and only video game set in The Boys universe.
We can only hope that the arrival of Vought Rising in the new year will put The Boys back into a positive light, but for now, the future is looking less bright for the beloved universe.
