The film is inspired by the true story of Jann Mardenborough, who transitioned from a gamer to a professional racecar driver after participating in the GT Academy competition that sought out the best Gran Turismo video game players. During its theatrical release, the film grossed approximately $122 million worldwide against a reported budget of $60 million. It currently boasts a Popcornmeter score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes.
