Way of the Warrior Kid trailer features Chris Pratt guiding his nephew

A New Underdog Story

It’s an age-old tale. When movies like Rocky and The Karate Kid were released (both also happened to be expertly made by John G. Avildsen), their influence can be felt with a generation of kids looking to become more than they ever thought they could possibly be. No one can resist a good underdog story. And that’s what Way of the Warrior Kid aims to give us. A young, awkward kid gets a swift kick in the butt and a wake-up call from his Navy SEAL uncle, played here by Chris Pratt. Let the workout montage begin! Apple TV has just released the new trailer.

Way of the Warrior Kid

Pratt stars in the film with Jude Hill, Linda Cardellini, Ava Torres, Levi McConaughey, Darien Sills-Evans, Carl McDowell and Parker Young.

The official plot synopsis reads,
Middle school has been a nightmare for Marc (Jude Hill), a good kid who’s bullied by his classmates and feels like he’s behind in everything, from academics to P.E. to just making friends. That changes when his injured Uncle Jake (Chris Pratt), a decorated Navy SEAL, comes to spend the summer and recuperate with Marc and his mom, Sarah (Linda Cardellini). To help Marc defend himself, Jake devises an ambitious program he calls “Operation Warrior Kid” based on his SEAL training. Instead of teaching his nephew how to fight, Jake shows Marc what real courage is, facing down his own demons along the way. Based on the bestselling novel by former Navy SEAL Jocko Willink, “Way of the Warrior Kid” is directed by McG (“Charlie’s Angels,” “Terminator Salvation”) from a screenplay by Will Staples (“Without Remorse,” “The Right Stuff”).

As Skydance wrapped up its merger deal with Paramount, the studio has also secured a global deal for a film package that includes Chris Pratt for the adaptation of Way of the Warrior Kid, which came out to $80-$85 million dollars. That total made this the single biggest package deal out of the film market since Apple had attached onto Emancipation back in 2020. It was revealed just ahead of the Cannes market that Pratt was set to star in the project for director McG.

Pratt expressed his excitement on the project, “Will Staples’ screenplay is incredible. I’ve known Jocko Willink for a couple of years, so I was eager to read the script based on his series of children’s books. I believe in the power of storytelling and felt particularly called to the material. I have faith this film will help to shape today’s youth, putting them on the right path. Our young people need this movie. Making films like this is why I created Indivisible Productions. In a world that feels divided, I believe it’s crucial to remember that we are one nation, and I hope this story will help bridge the growing divide and inspire the next generation to learn valuable lessons about discipline, self-reliance, strength, and compassion.”
