10 Perfect Movies From the Last 7 Years to Watch

The 2020s have been a remarkable decade for film so far, contrary to popular belief. While it can be distressing to consider the consolidation of media companies, the shift towards streaming new releases, the fragmented political landscape, or the obsession with social media that complicates attending screenings without disruptive moviegoers, there have been several instant classics that inspire hope.

The last seven years have seen filmmakers rise to the occasion by utilizing new technology, modernist ideas, and innovative distribution strategies to create films that resonate with current global events. Although many more masterpieces will undoubtedly emerge before the decade concludes, the abundance of options available already demonstrates that cinema is vibrant and more powerful than ever.

The Father is a profound drama that delves into the realities of aging in a way not previously depicted in cinema. Anthony Hopkins plays an elderly man who begins to lose his memories and becomes increasingly disoriented as he realizes he no longer has control over his own thoughts. Although adapted from the stage play of the same name, The Father feels like an accomplished and immersive cinematic experience thanks to the remarkable direction by Florian Zeller, who made one of the decade’s most significant debuts.

The Father features one of Hopkins’ greatest performances, which is a notable statement considering his extensive resume. Anyone who has dealt with an aging or ill loved one will resonate with this heartbreaking and painfully authentic dramatic masterpiece.

Asteroid City is a maturation of themes that Wes Anderson has explored throughout his career, examining how storytelling can serve as a medium for dealing with loneliness, loss, and depression. While it’s among Anderson’s most sobering films regarding subject matter, Asteroid City is also brightly lit and features a fun retro-futuristic design that distinguishes it within his impressive body of work.

Anderson has consistently assembled amazing ensembles, but Asteroid City might showcase the best performance he has ever elicited from Jason Schwartzman; Schwartzman had his breakthrough starring in Anderson’s coming-of-age dramedy Rushmore, making it fitting for them to reunite for him to portray a loving father imparting lessons to his children.

Killers of the Flower Moon is another masterpiece from Martin Scorsese, establishing him as one of the few directors to create an all-time classic across six different decades. This film allows Scorsese to reflect on his interest in true crime by exploring how the murders and hatred towards America’s indigenous people were concealed, enabling the nation to forget its original sins in pursuit of capitalist glory.

Killers of the Flower Moon brings together Scorsese’s two greatest leading men, marking the first time he directed both Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio in the same film, while also being their third collaboration after This Boy’s Life and Marvin’s Room. However, it is Lily Gladstone’s breakthrough performance that makes this film such a poignant experience.
