There are only a few weeks left until Gerard Butler’s 109-minute-long disaster movie leaves streaming.
Reviewing Butler’s filmography, the actor excels in cinematic stories filled with action and excitement. One of his early roles was in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, and he gained significant recognition in the United States with 300. More recently, Butler has captivated audiences with films like Plane, Kandahar, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon.
While most of these films feature Butler’s characters facing human adversaries, there are a few where he confronts the elements. In 2020’s Greenland, he portrayed a father striving to protect his family from a catastrophic comet impact, and this year’s Greenland 2: Migration delves into the aftermath of that apocalyptic scenario. Before his ventures in Greenland, Butler starred in another disaster film titled Geostorm, which will soon no longer be available for free streaming.
After being added to Tubi on August 1, Geostorm is set to depart the platform at the end of the month. Following its removal, the 2017 film will only be accessible through purchase or rental on platforms like Apple TV, Prime Video, and YouTube. Other titles leaving Tubi in August include Jim Carrey’s 2000 cult classic Me, Myself, & Irene, the Twilight series, the Lethal Weapon franchise, and the Friday films, among many others.
Last year, Geostorm was a significant success on Netflix, ranking No. 4 on the platform’s global chart of Top 10 English-language movies for the week of March 31 through April 6. In September, it transitioned to HBO Max, where it enjoyed similar worldwide popularity. Its presence on HBO Max was fitting as the movie was originally released by Warner Bros. Pictures; however, by August 2026, Tubi will have exclusive rights to Geostorm.
Geostorm features Butler as Jake Lawson, the chief architect behind the “Dutch Boy” system of climate-controlling satellites. After being removed from the project, Jake is dispatched to the International Climate Space Station to investigate malfunctioning satellites, leading to a “geostorm” that threatens Earth’s existence. The film also stars Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Alexandra Maria Lara, Ed Harris, and Andy Garcia. Directed by Dean Devlin, he co-wrote the script with Paul Guyot and produced alongside David Ellison and Dana Goldberg.
Despite its streaming success in 2025, this Butler-led film is far from critically acclaimed. Geostorm faced harsh criticism upon its release on October 20, 2017, holding an 18% Tomatometer score and a 35% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It also underperformed at the box office, grossing only $221.6 million worldwide against a reported budget of $120-130 million.
After Geostorm leaves Tubi, Butler will next reprise his role as Stoick the Vast in the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2, which is set to hit theaters on June 11, 2027. He is also starring alongside Hayley Atwell and Omari Hardwick in the action thriller Empire City, which currently lacks a release date.
