Chris Pratt’s Sci-Fi Flop Leaves Netflix After 116 Minutes

In his first year as a movie star, when Jurassic World delivered the biggest opening in domestic box-office history and ended up grossing $1.6 billion worldwide, Chris Pratt proved that he didn’t need to rely on franchises for success. He headlined an original sci-fi movie that grossed more than $300 million worldwide despite major controversy and mediocre reviews. He was, of course, joined by the equally popular Jennifer Lawrence, who were both taken aback by the film’s poor reviews. Pratt later acknowledged that he was “caught off guard” by the vitriol, which mainly revolved around the film’s inciting incident. The movie in question is currently streaming on Netflix in the United States, but not for much longer.

It was directed by Morten Tyldum, who was coming off the Oscar-winning biopic The Imitation Game. Tyldum hasn’t directed a feature film since the 2016 sci-fi movie starring Pratt and Lawrence, although he has worked extensively in streaming, having directed the pilot episode of Jack Ryan for Prime Video, and worked on Apple TV shows such as Defending Jacob, Silo, and Cape Fear. Tyldum’s 2016 sci-fi movie was criticized in one early review for justifying SA, which caught on and became a controversy that the movie couldn’t ever escape from. In an interview with Variety, Pratt said, “I personally think the movie is very good, I’m very proud of it. I’ll be curious to see if it holds up — the criticism and the movie.”

In a world of scarcity, what resource do you guard most fiercely?
What we protect reveals what we believe survival actually requires.

AKnowledge. If you understand the system, you don’t need resources — you can generate them.
BFuel. Everything else — movement, power, escape — runs on it.
CTrust. In a world of fakes and informants, a truly reliable ally is rarer than any commodity.
DWater. And after water, information — the two things empires are truly built on.
EShips and credits. The galaxy is big — you survive it by being able to move through it freely.
