Early in Godzilla Conquers the Multiverse #1, Doctor Doom reveals his solution to the impossible problem: assemble a strike force from across the Multiverse capable of succeeding where everyone else has failed. Rather than calling on a traditional Avengers lineup, Doom recruits an eclectic collection of heroes and villains that includes Miles Morales, Emma Frost, Ghost Rider, the Punisher, Kang the Conqueror, and several other unexpected allies. It’s an inspired premise because the roster feels anything but conventional. Many of these characters would never willingly work together under normal circumstances, but Godzilla’s rampage has left them with little choice. The result is one of the strangest Marvel teams assembled in recent memory, bringing together wildly different personalities with a single goal: survive long enough to stop the King of the Monsters. The issue also wastes little time showing why Doom believes extraordinary measures are necessary. Godzilla is leaving entire realities in ruins, forcing Marvel’s heroes to think on a multiversal scale. That larger scope gives the series an identity beyond another superhero-versus-monster crossover while also creating plenty of opportunities for unexpected character interactions. Several members of Doom’s team have spent as much time fighting each other as they have saving the world, making their uneasy alliance just as compelling as the kaiju action itself.
