At long last, Ghosts has officially returned for Season 6. Though we’ve been neatly dropped into another month-long hiatus, the Halloween special gave audiences plenty of treats to enjoy in the meantime. “Halloween 6: The Mirror” brings us back to Woodstone a few months after Pete’s (Richie Moriarty) disappearance and follows a chaotic Halloween night of otherworldly shenanigans when a newly purchased mirror brings Hetty’s (Rebecca Wisocky) long-estranged sister to the B&B. Ahead of the episode, I spoke to Asher Grodman and Rebecca Wisocky for an episode of our behind-the-scenes series Collider Set Stories.
During my conversation with Wisocky, we spoke about finally getting to meet Hetty’s mustachioed sister Margaret, who was previously mentioned in an off-hand comment about Hetty’s marriage to Elias in Season 1. “For a long time, I was pitching that Rose McIver should play her, but of course, she’s unavailable,” joked Wisocky. McIver is taking a break from the series following the arrival of her new baby. “But who was available was the wonderful Maria Thayer. So she’s fantastic. She’s a wonderful match for Hetty. She was very kind and generous and funny.” Continuing, Wisocky heralded the episode as Ghosts doing exactly what it always sets out to do week after week, telling Collider:
“I think the show does what, you know, Ghosts does best. It’s ridiculous and stupid and hilarious and also really touching. Hetty learns some lessons and changes her opinion about what previously had been the most pivotal moment in her life, losing out on her chance at love.”
Unpacking the opportunity of finally getting to explore this relationship on screen, Wisocky said, “I figured that there would be conflict, but it’s interesting in that I assigned to her the role of having ruined my life. But she simultaneously, for the last 130 years, has done the very same thing.” Wisocky also noted the devastating historical accuracy of Hetty’s estrangement from her sister coming down to a man, saying, “I think it's interesting that it all also comes down to a man. It’s disappointing and also historically obviously accurate that at this period of time, these women, their futures and their lives and their potential happiness were entirely in the hands of whether or not they married well. […] If only they had been capable of truly listening to one another and supporting one another, things might have turned out differently for both of them.”

While most of this two-part special follows Hetty's misadventures with Margaret,
the episodes end with an exciting cliffhanger featuring one beloved ghost from Woodstone returning.
In its final moments,
as his friends observe his death anniversary with silence,
Pete reappears at Woodstone.
However,
his return doesn't mean that all mysteries surrounding his disappearance have been resolved;
when Pete re-materializes at his death site,
he seems reset back to that exact moment without any recollection of his last 40 years as a ghost.
Grodman highlighted how Pete's memory loss impacts relationships among ghosts:
“The most intriguing aspect is how Pete's memory loss affects relationships among us,” he explained.
Whether you're an Alberta/Pete shipper or not,
the dynamics among us eight ghosts have shifted significantly; we've lost one-eighth of our family.”
He added:
“He's no longer our friend; he's someone different.”
While flashbacks exploring ghosts' lives between death and Sam & Jay's arrival at Woodstone have been scarce,
Grodman,
Wisocky,
and other cast members have theories regarding events throughout their histories:
“I envision Trevor being overwhelming when he first arrived; he came from an entirely different world than these other ghosts,” Grodman shared.
“It must have been challenging for many ghosts dealing with Trevor's personality;
he likely got everything he wanted without hearing 'no.' I imagine Pete served as an olive branch bringing Trevor into our group.”
Wisocky humorously noted:
“There might be one or two ghosts considering how they can exploit this situation.”
She added:
“And Hetty's probably among them.”
Wisocky praised Richie Moriarty for navigating this significant change:
“Oh my gosh;
everything has changed;
he's unaware of his relationships with living people;
he may not even realize he's a ghost,” she pointed out.
“What an intriguing challenge for an actor—to rediscover oneself while surrounded by people familiar with everything about him.”
Grodman hinted that remnants of Pete from 40 years ago may linger:
“There'll be an exploration as Pete reconciles his memories with those he lacks;
I'm eager to see how it unfolds.”
On another note,
Wisocky remarked:
“One theme this season revolves around new beginnings;
this certainly embodies that concept.”
Ghosts wil return for another holiday special on December 10 at 9 PM ET on CBS,
followed by 18 remaining episodes of Season 6 in 2027.
