A glance at the box office this weekend would have you believe that there are only a handful of actors in Hollywood. Tom Holland and Zendaya, who appeared in prominent roles in the recently released The Odyssey, are also headlining Spider-Man: Brand New Day. They are joined in the superhero movie by Jon Bernthal, who also appeared in Christopher Nolan‘s epic. In just a few months, Zendaya will reunite on screen with another member of The Odyssey‘s cast, Robert Pattinson, in the hotly awaited sci-fi film Dune: Part Three. The two headlined the sleeper hit The Drama earlier this year. And now, The Odyssey has overtaken another of Zendaya’s past hits — a box-office behemoth that has come to be regarded as one of the best sci-fi sequels of all time.

This week, Nolan’s record-breaking epic passed the 0 million milestone at the worldwide box office. Around the same time, 13 days into its domestic run, it overtook the lifetime haul of Nolan’s 2023 hit Oppenheimer. That film won the Best Picture honor at the Oscars and earned Nolan his first-ever Best Director Academy Award. Oppenheimer fell just slightly short of the coveted $1 billion mark worldwide and has now settled at $975 million. It will inevitably pass the $1 billion milestone if it is ever re-released. Two of Nolan’s earlier films — The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises — have achieved this feat already, and The Odyssey looks certain to overtake them in the coming days.

StarringMatt Damon in the lead role, the movie has now surpassed the $714 million lifetime global haul ofDune: Part Two. The sci-fi sequel was released theatrically in2024 , having received a major roll-out from Warner Bros. after the fiasco of the firstDune‘s simultaneous debut on HBO Max. Incidentally, Nolan joined directorDenis Villeneuve in promoting the film, which was shown in large format in theaters equipped to do so.
Dune: Part Twonow holds a “Certified Fresh”92 % critics’ score and a “Verified Hot”95 % audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, which is in the same range asThe Odyssey‘s94 % critics’ score and97 % audience score.
